RETAINING WALLS

A retaining wall is a structural element first and a landscaping feature second, and treating it the wrong way around is how walls end up failing years later — usually from drainage that was never properly designed, not from the wall itself being weak. We design engineering and drainage together from the outset for that reason, because a retaining wall with poor drainage behind it is on a slow path to movement or failure regardless of how well it was built on day one. Where council approval is required because of wall height or site conditions, we manage that pathway as part of the project rather than leaving it for the client to navigate separately. On sites with significant level changes, retaining works are usually connected to broader civil or landscaping scope, and we treat them that way — integrated into the overall site strategy rather than delivered in isolation and hoped to work with whatever's built around them later. Material choice also matters more than clients often expect — segmental block, poured concrete, timber or gabion each suit different site conditions, loads and budgets, and we talk clients through that trade-off early rather than defaulting to whichever material is easiest for us to source.

What we do differently

Engineering and drainage are designed together from the outset, because a wall with poor drainage behind it is a slow-motion failure regardless of construction quality. We manage the council approval pathway directly where a permit is required, and integrate retaining works with broader civil and landscaping scope rather than treating them in isolation.

Why trust AFA
